Description of Department and Training Opportunities

Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton and Somerset Foundation Trust  is set in central southern Somerset and is easily accessible via the M5 and has good train links from Bristol.

We believe the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Unit combines clinical excellence with enthusiastic teaching and friendly support. Musgrove Maternity has about 3500 deliveries per annum. Some of these deliveries may be in Midwife led units or at home. We have an excellent team of community midwives who look after all our low risk women identified on the ‘Low Risk Pathway’. We help to support community care with clinics based outside the main hospital to cover the varied demands of the region. We are also supported by an excellent neonatal unit (Level 2). There are 2 main maternity wards covering both antenatal and postnatal care. We have a 8-bedded Labour Ward and a dedicated Obstetric theatre.

Consultants provide 60 hours of on call services and are available from home outside of this.

There is one registrar and SHO on call at nights and weekends.

This provides excellent opportunity for trainees to develop management and leadership skills as well as Obstetric skills.

Weekly risk management meetings and monthly Labour wards forums are held which are open to all trainees.

Gynaecology Services

Regular Day surgery and outpatient procedure clinics are held several times a week and provide an opportunity to develop hysteroscopic and laparoscopic skills.

There is an Early Pregnancy Unit which provides excellent training for staff keen for early pregnancy scanning. We also have a gynaecological ultrasound simulator available for training.

There are regular main theatre lists, where trainees will have an opportunity to develop open benign gynaecology, urogynaecology and minimal access skills.

The Gynaecology Department has accreditation as an Endometriosis Centre.

Outpatient clinics are held at Taunton and in the community in Bridgwater and Minehead. These comprise of general and speciality gynaecology clinics such as Urogynaecology, Menstrual Dysfunction, Vulval clinics and Endometriosis clinics offering a breadth of experience to support the training needs of the modern Consultant.

A new £80 million surgical centre including state-of-the-art operating theatres, a critical care unit and an endoscopy suite is currently being built and expected to open in 2024.

Gynaeoncology Services

The Gynaecological oncology multidisciplinary team (MDT) comprises experts including oncological surgeons, clinical and medical oncologists, expert radiologists and pathologists, clinical nurse specialists, and research nurses. It is a tertiary referral centre for South Somerset and parts of West Dorset.

The gynaecological oncology team participates in national and international trials and is actively involved in the NHS improvements' enhanced recovery after surgery and survivorship initiatives.
